Player Experience
Volkan began playing soccer at the age of 5 in his hometown of Mersin, Turkey. By 9, he was able to join his neighborhood’s team as a striker. This street soccer league, though informal with no coaches and organized by the youths themselves, was extremely competitive. Here, Volkan sharpened his abilities. He also supplemented his training by watching his favorite Turkish (Fenerbahce) and European teams at every possible opportunity.
After playing for his high school and university soccer teams, Volkan played professionally as a forward and midfielder by age 20. Simultaneously, he also played pro basketball as a center.
Volkan moved to Texas in 1998 and has continued to play several seasons of indoor and outdoor soccer. In 2001, he met his wife on an indoor soccer field where they ended up on the same co-ed soccer team. They married a year later. Volkan has two children, a future TFC '07 Boy and a TFC '09 Girl.
In 2009, he earned the National "C" License from the United States Soccer Federation.
"Some people say soccer's a matter of life or death, but it isn't. It's much more important than that."
